Maui Coffee, Rebuilding A Community One Cup At A Time

If you’ve ever visited Maui, you may already know of its magnificence. This little island, only 727 square miles in size, was formed more than half a million years ago when two volcanoes rose out of the sea and slowly, year by year, lava flowed until it met in the middle to form the second biggest of the Hawaiian Islands.

In Hawaii, we call Maui “The Valley Isle” because of the lush green valley between the two volcanoes. Between Mauna Kahalawai (also called the West Maui Mountains) and Haleakalā, the giant dormant volcano in the east.

Maui is a beautiful land of contrasts. A place where mountains reach thousands of feet in the air and far below, golden sand beaches stretch for miles. A place of lush rainforests set against stark black lava rock and red earth, rich with mineral deposits from the volcanoes.  A place of palm trees swaying in the trade winds.

It’s a tourist’s paradise. Haleakalā is one of the few drivable volcano summits in the world. You can drive right to the summit, ten thousand feet in the sky. And Makena Beach, which we call "Big Beach,” is one of the longest beaches in the entire world, a mile and a half long and a hundred feet wide.

If that’s not already enough, every winter, humpback whales migrate from Alaska to Maui, to breed, calve and raise their young in the warm waters of the ʻAuʻau Channel.  And high above the beaches, in the uplands where mist clings to the upper slopes of Haleakalā, coffee trees stretch for miles across soil rich with minerals from long cooled lava of the sleeping giant.

Coffee with a purpose

While Hawaii is widely recognized as the heart of commercial coffee farming, the farmers on Maui carry an even deeper sense of pride and purpose. They’re cultivating more than just a livelihood and a great cup of coffee — they’re brewing a powerful story of resilience.

In the wake of the devastating wildfires that tore through Lahaina and other parts of the island in 2023, destroying homes, landmarks and businesses and inflicting billions in damages, Maui is a community of people who have come together to heal and rebuild, and coffee farmers stand among them.

Maui-grown coffee is a tribute to the island's rich agricultural heritage and its enduring strength. Cultivated in volcanic soil at high elevations and nourished by gentle trade winds and tropical rains, this coffee is as unique as the land it comes from.

Introducing Maui Strong Coffee

We’re proud to partner with our local farming community to introduce Lion Maui Strong 100% Maui Coffee — a tribute to the rich spirit of the Valley Isle. Grown by Mahi Pono Farms between the lush slopes of the West Maui Mountains and the soaring heights of Haleakalā, these coffee beans are nurtured in fertile volcanic soil under ideal growing conditions.

We use only 100% Arabica beans, carefully cultivated by fifth-generation farmers and expertly roasted at our Lion Coffee Roastery to highlight the distinctive notes of almond and dark chocolate that make this Maui coffee truly one of a kind. The result is a smooth, vibrant cup with a subtle sweetness, a hint of citrus, and a finish that lingers like a sunset over Kaanapali.

It’s a medium roast, rich and smooth with taste notes of Vanilla, Cocoa, roasted nuts, and whisper of berry on the finish. It's a flavor that speaks to connoisseurs, and a story that resonates with anyone who's ever fallen in love with this island.

But this coffee isn't just special because of how it tastes. It's special because of what it stands for.

A portion of every purchase goes directly to Hawaii Community Foundation's Maui Strong Fund, which is dedicated to providing ongoing support for the people of Maui affected by the fires. Helping families and communities get back on their feet after devastating losses.

We’re proud to share this coffee with you, and proud to stand with the people of Maui as they recover and rebuild. Whether you’re sipping it here in Hawaii or brewing it back home on the mainland, know this: your cup of Maui Strong Coffee does more than just taste good, it does good. Mahalo for your support.
